16. Anne - Santigold (Santogold, 2008)
More than possessing just a unique tonal quality voice, Santigold uses her pipes like you would a musical instrument - and one for experimenting at that. On one of her most memorable tracks, Creator, she launches into a series of eeks and ahhs right off the bat before proudly proclaims “me, I’m a creator!” When she wants to be sultry, she doesn’t become your typical breathy songstress. On Anne, she coos a controlled call of the wild - her ah ooh-ooh-oohs are simmery and sophisticated. She drags her lines out like she’s pulling a velvet cover slowly over some scandalous peek of skin. Santigold deserves to be heard wide and loud. I’m convinced there isn’t any genre she can’t emote and make her own.
{My 50 ALL-TIME FAVOURITE FEMALE VOCALISTS list continues (tagged Female Vocalists)! The criteria are simple: they are female of the species, I love their voice, and they have attempted to sing in English at one point in their career. The present list is focused mostly on the quality/uniqueness of their tone (voice box), and their ability to emote the hell out of the songs.}
